Many people have trouble learning guitar chords, mainly because they don’t understand how chords are built. To try to memorize all chords for guitar without knowing anything about the theory behind it would take an eternity. But here is a way for you to teach yourself the chords. Lets look at a regular G major barre chord (view as tabulature):

-3- R (Two octaves up. Can also be seen as an 8th)
-3- 5th
-4- Ma3
-5- R (8th)
-5- 5th
-1- R

R=root
Ma3=major 3rd
Mi3=minor 3rd
5th=5th

Can you figure out how to play a Gmaj7 chord? In a maj7 chord the 7th should be major, which means it is a half step up from the regular 7th or a half step down from the 8th. To be able to play this chord (and to make it sound better) we need to leave two notes out, the 5th on the A-string and the root on the high E-string. Here is the Gmaj7 chord:

Now try this exercise with other chord shapes as well, for example start out with a major barre chord with the root on the A-string. Try to play m7 and maybe even m7b5 as well. After a while you will automatically know which note to change to get the chord you want. And the open string chords work the same way, just imagine that your index finger is there instead of the nut.
