You might have heard of guitar tabs and learning how to play the guitar with guitar tabs. If you see a 0 adjacent to any string, this means it should be played as an open chord. You don’t have to press on the string. You just have to make sure that you pick this string or strum it with the others.

Understanding guitar chords

Many people have trouble learning guitar chords, mainly because they don’t understand how chords are built. To try to memorize all chords for guitar without knowing anything about the theory behind it would take an eternity. But here is a way for you to teach yourself the chords. Lets look at a regular G major barre chord (view as tabulature):

-3- R (Two octaves up. Can also be seen as an 8th)
-3- 5th
-4- Ma3
-5- R (8th)
-5- 5th
-1- R

R=root
Ma3=major 3rd
Mi3=minor 3rd
5th=5th

This chord consists of only three notes cheap coach purses , the root, the major 3rd and the 5th(doubled in different octaves). For anyone who isn’t familiar with these terms cheap five fingers , here’s the simplified version. The root is the note upon which the chord is built. The major 3rd is 4 half steps (4 frets) up from the root and the 5th is 3 half steps up from the 3rd. If we want to change this chord into a G minor chord all we need to do is change the major 3rd into a minor 3rd. We do that by simply lowering the 3rd a half step (1 fret) down. The G minor chord will then look like this:

So to make a G major chord into a G7, all we need to do is let go of the 4th finger (pinky finger) and the 7th will be right there in the barre grip. The G7 chord looks like this:

Can you figure out how to play a Gmaj7 chord? In a maj7 chord the 7th should be major, which means it is a half step up from the regular 7th or a half step down from the 8th. To be able to play this chord (and to make it sound better) we need to leave two notes out, the 5th on the A-string and the root on the high E-string. Here is the Gmaj7 chord:

Now try this exercise with other chord shapes as well, for example start out with a major barre chord with the root on the A-string. Try to play m7 and maybe even m7b5 as well. After a while you will automatically know which note to change to get the chord you want. And the open string chords work the same way, just imagine that your index finger is there instead of the nut.
